The Resurgence of Smart Rings: A New Era for Wearables

When people think of "wearables," they often immediately associate it with smartwatches. However, 2024 was a relatively quiet year for smartwatches, marked by iterative updates rather than groundbreaking innovations. This is not uncommon in a maturing category, where the focus shifts from revolutionizing to refining existing products.

However, in recent times, there’s been a noticeable resurgence of interest in smart rings. While they’re not new, 2024 saw a proliferation of innovative ideas and designs that have revitalized this niche form factor. As someone who had an inkling about this trend back in January, when several smart rings were showcased at CES, I was excited to dive deeper into this category.

In February, Samsung announced its long-rumored Galaxy Ring, which marked a significant turning point for the industry. As one of the major players in the smartwatch space, Samsung’s decision to branch out into smart rings propelled this previously niche form factor into the mainstream. This move is particularly noteworthy, as it indicates that even established companies are willing to experiment and innovate.

2024: A Mini Renaissance for Smart Rings

The newer crop of smart rings that I had the opportunity to test was exciting because of its diverse range of features and ideas. The Galaxy Ring, for instance, can seamlessly integrate with Samsung’s Galaxy Watches to optimize battery life and sensor accuracy. When paired with a Z Fold 6 or a Z Flip 6, it can even recognize pinching gestures to control the phone’s camera. While some may view this as an attempt to lock users into Samsung’s ecosystem, these innovative features demonstrate that smart rings are capable of more than just basic tracking.

Innovative Ideas from Various Players

Samsung isn’t the only company pushing the boundaries of what smart rings can do. The Circular Slim, for example, has introduced a new concept with silent haptic alarms and an in-app AI chatbot. Movano’s Evie Ring caught my attention for its unique open-gap design and ambitious pursuit of FDA clearance for its metrics. Even Casio, known for its retro low-tech designs, is joining the fray with a smart ring that blends form and function.

The Rise of Competition in Smart Rings

It’s particularly refreshing to see new ideas emerge when you consider that Oura has dominated this space for nearly a decade. Oura’s primary focus on sleep tracking and recovery has led to its reputation as one of the best in the business. However, recent developments indicate that competition is heating up, with new features and integrations being launched at a rapid pace. Even Oura itself released a fourth-gen ring, which demonstrates that this industry is evolving rapidly.

Challenges Ahead for Smart Rings

While the interest in smart rings is palpable, there are several challenges that these devices must overcome to succeed in the market. Cost, for one, is a significant factor. Smart rings are often priced similarly to smartwatches but offer fewer features. Fit is another concern, as manufacturers must contend with varying finger sizes and account for seasonal swelling.

The Future of Smart Rings: Will the Renaissance Continue?

As we move into 2025, it’s uncertain whether the renaissance of smart rings will continue or if this trend will fizzle out. We don’t yet know how well Samsung’s Galaxy Ring is selling, which could be a bellwether for the category as a whole. If it succeeds, especially as an accessory to other gadgets, we can expect interest from major players like Google and Apple.

However, there are also concerns about Samsung’s commitment to this new form factor if it doesn’t immediately take off. What I do know is that my own experience wearing six smart rings sparked countless conversations with curious friends, family members, colleagues, and acquaintances. Some were eager to break free from the confines of smartwatches and explore more discreet options.

Others were deeply invested in sleep optimization and sought out comfortable and long-lasting tracking solutions. The interest is there; now it’s up to manufacturers to deliver on these promises and ensure that this renaissance continues.

The Verdict: Will Smart Rings Become Mainstream?

As I reflect on my experience with smart rings, one thing is clear: the industry has reached a tipping point. With innovative ideas from various players, a growing interest in comfort and discretion, and an evolving market landscape, it’s uncertain whether this renaissance will continue or if we’ll return to Oura being the only game in town.
